Celine Dion performs in concert at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Sunday, July 31, 2016.

L’Amour existe encore. Oh boy does it ever.

The love that people ici feel for notre Céline nationale doesn’t just still exist. It’s stronger than ever.

To quote another song Dion songs – ‘Do I love you? My oh my. River deep, mountain high.’

From the moment Céline Dion took the stage at the Bell Centre Sunday night, emotions were running ridiculously high. Dion was fighting back the tears from the first moment and she had to dry her eyes on several occasions over the course of the soirée. The crowd was as moved as the pop star.

The standing ovations just kept coming. Look, this was a special evening. It was the Quebec superstar’s first concert in Montreal in seven years — the kick-off of a nearly-sold-out ten-date run at the arena — and it was also the first gig for her here since the death in January of her husband and manager René Angélil. She addressed that right off the top.

“I’m very happy to be here,” said Dion. “I just want to say I received all your words, your memories, all that energy. The last time that we saw each other, it was under very sad circumstances. But I want to make this a happy show, with strong emotions. The kids are doing good. I’m doing good. It’s time to smile and think of great memories. For sure, here in Montreal, I have to think of René and I know he’s here with us.”

At that point, she looked up and blew a kiss to the rafters.

Wherever Dion performs — whether it’s in Las Vegas or South Africa — there’s a special connection to the audience. But there’s something even more unique when she brings her show back to her hometown.

The amazing thing about this show is that it has almost nothing in common with the Caesars Palace concert. Here, 22 of the 30 songs are in the language of Charlebois — there are only eight English tunes and they’re basically the monster hits.

This was really a stroll through Dion’s franco repertoire, including some deep tracks that are likely only known by the hardcore fans.

In fact, she only got to her first song in the language of Streisand 50 minutes into the show. It was a rousing rendition of Because You Loved Me and that was followed by two more biggies, It’s All Coming Back To Me Now and The Power of Love.

That’s the Céline the world knows and loves — or doesn’t love. Having just heard ten songs en Français, it was impossible not to notice how the franco material lives in a much more nuanced musical world.

As soon as she stepped into Because You Loved Me, the hand gestures got bigger, the band pumped it up a few notches, and all of a sudden it was Céline dialled up to ten.

She was actually mighty restrained in the early going, reminding us that there’s a real emotional range to some of these songs and it’s a side of her that casual fans of her anglo material are probably not familiar with. All of the coolsters who look down on Dion should’ve heard her wrenching take on Pour que tu m’aimes encore Sunday night. If you’re not moved by that, you really are way too hung up on your musical prejudices.

The show was also a reminder of how Dion commands a stage. There is never a moment when she’s delivering anything less than her 110-percent, like hockey players back in the day. She wouldn’t have a clue how to mail in a performance.

She’s the ultimate old-school performer. First and foremost it’s about real live singing — I know it’s a novel concept in today’s world of pre-fabricated auto-tuned ‘singers’ — and man, that voice was in stellar form Sunday night.

Speaking of old-school, there’s the crack band. I mean who else tours with a line-up that includes a 14-piece orchestra, a five-piece brass section, three backing vocalists, a drummer and percussionist, a guitarist, bassist and piano-playing band-leader (Scott Price)?

Highlights? An explosive re-interpretation of Robert Charlebois’s Ordinaire, which will be on her upcoming franco album Encore un soir. A rocking Ce Soir on danse à Naziland, which began with a musical excerpt from the Law & Order theme music as a tribute to Angélil, who adored that music. There was her Prince homage, Purple Rain, complete with wailing lead guitar, followed by far and away the most swinging section with Love Can Move Mountains, River Deep, Mountain High and her exclamation-point of a cover of Queen’s The Show Must Go On.

Then came the encores, including, of course, that little Irish ditty My Heart Will Go On, a couple more standing ovations, and then an image of Dion with her arms wrapped around Angélil.

So yeah she wears her heart on her sleeve and that’s just the way her fans like it.

Sometimes, it ‘s simply referred to as the “THE HOUSE THAT CELINE BUILT.” And rightfully so. The Colosseum at Caesars Palace opened in 2003 with Celine Dion as its first resident performer.
Thirteen years, and soon-to-be 1,000 shows later, she’s still packing the house, as fans from across the globe come to see her perform in the 4,298-seat theater that was originally constructed for her show, A New Day….

Caesars Palace is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. You’ve been there since 2003. What’s it like performing there after all these years?

I remember vividly arriving in this beautiful new theater in 2003. It was a rich and wonderful experience indeed. And definitely A New Day… for me!

What’s it like being part of the Caesars family?
Caesars is truly part of my professional family. And, as it goes with family relations, it’s dear to my heart.

You’re approaching your 1,000th performance at The Colosseum. How does that feel?

I never thought we would reach this milestone. I truly enjoy being onstage. For me, performing is about having a good time with my fans, the musicians and crew.

Do you remember your first performance at The Colosseum? Prior to that, did you perform at Circus Maximus?

Yes, I performed at Circus Maximus back in 1996. It turned out to be a good omen and the beginning of a wonderful experience.

The Center for Business and Economic Development has said your influence in Las Vegas is bigger than that of Elvis, Sinatra and Liberace combined! What’s your reaction?

I’m very honored and proud to be a part of this community. To have the privilege to do what I love most in an ideal environment, surrounded by people who love me enough to travel here, thrusting their affection and support, show after show.

So many entertainers have followed your lead. Cher, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Shania Twain, Britney Spears and others. Why do you think stars are attracted to today’s Las Vegas?

Las Vegas has become the entertainment capital of the world. It is quite normal that artists wish to come here to perform.

Do you have any superstitions preparing for a show?

We had Rene’s hand [cast] in bronze many years ago. And today, it has become a tradition to touch it before going onstage.

Celine Dion and late husband Rene-Charles You gave a very emotional performance when you returned to the stage on February 23. Was it difficult? What was going through your mind?

It was a very emotional night. I had to sing for the first time without [Rene’s] presence—my mentor, my love. But I knew he was watching over me.

How many more years do you see yourself performing?

I never think about that. I hope to sing as long as I breathe. I have been singing all my life, since childhood, and I don’t see myself retiring or not performing. It’s what I love to do.

You often joke about singing “My Heart Will Go On.” What are your feelings toward the song today?

It’s a classic and people want to hear it. I was very fortunate to have James Horner and Will Jennings give me the opportunity to sing their masterpiece.

The twins are turning six this year. Do you feel they’re growing up fast? Yes! I believe that all parents think the same.

And Rene-Charles is 15. Are you ready for the teenage years? Is any parent ready for that? Really? But Rene-Charles is a very good son. So like all parents, I always hope for the best. But let’s say, we’re off to a very good start!
