this week’s cover story that she told her youngest children about their father René Angélil‘s January death with help from the beloved children’s movie Up.
Dion says she waited a few days after twins Nelson and Eddy Angélil, 5, lost their father to hislong battle with cancer then threw them a glitter and balloon-filled party.
It was then – ahead of Angélil’s funeral – that she revealed that “Papa” had “gone up” – floating away on balloons, never to return.
For much more on Céline Dion’s heartbreaking loss, how she told her children, and how they are all finding the strength to go on, pick up the upcoming issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.
“I did not want to relate the passing to doctors and have them be afraid,” she says, adding of easing them into the concept of death, “It’s the thing I’m most proud of.”
Dion, who also has 15-year-old son René-Charles Angelil with her late husband, says, “I see René in all three of them. Not one moment do I feel like they’re looking for him and questioning.”
Angélil, Dion’s longtime manager and mentor, was 73 when he died. He had gone through three separate bouts of cancer after first being diagnosed in 1999. His throat cancer returned, for a final time, in 2014.
Though she’s dealing with unimaginable heartbreak, the singer tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story, “I really, really want to prove to my kids their mother is strong.” For Dion, work has become her safe haven. She’ll be taking the stage at Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards to receive the Icon award and performing a cover of Queen’s “The Show Must Go On,” a song title that had a strong significance in the couple’s romance and work relationship.
“René always insisted the show must go on,” the mother of three says. “You know what, I’m 48 years old and I lost the love of my life. I miss him a lot from when he was great but not when he was suffering. I cannot be selfish. You have to let people go. I feel at peace.”
He was first diagnosed with throat cancer in 1999. In December 2013, doctors removed a tumor, but the cancer returned in 2014.
“It’s been a long, long journey,” Dion said about caring for her late husband. “We were living in hope, knowing that there’s no hope.” The couple first met in Montreal when Dion was just 12. They would go on to spend 21 years of marriage together and have three children, René-Charles, 15, and 5-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy.

The decision to Céline Dion talking to Good Morning America no surprise. In March 2015, this is the show that she had told how she fed René Angélil three times a day since his operation. The journalist Deborah Roberts had collected his moving testimony. Chances Celine Dion answer questions Oprah seemed rather thin, since the latter would have required maintenance to be broadcast on OWN, its own chain, which rallied a much narrower audience than ABC, the network behind Good Morning America .
