Céline Dion just released a new album of French-language songs, but she’s already at work on her next English-language LP—and you can hear a song from it today.
Pink wrote “Recovering” for Dion following the death of Dion’s husband and longtime manager, René Angélil, as well as her brother earlier this year. “She’s a genuine person and [it was] so generous of her to take the time to write a song for me during the most difficult time of mine,” Dion told EW this summer. “People have a tendency to send me really sad songs, and we do want to sing the touching songs, but life is beautiful, and I really want to believe that René has a life after his life, that he doesn’t suffer anymore.”
In a statement provided exclusively to EW, Pink called writing for Dion “one of the biggest honors of my life. “She is like a magic light bulb, walking around emanating light into the world,” Pink says. “When I wrote this song, there was such a simple need to it. I know everyone wants to hear Celine wail, I wanted to hear Celine’s soul. She is just simply amazing.”

Celine is dropping a new song off her upcoming 2017 release of her english album at midnight/tomorrow on September 9th. Check out the single art below and how the song came about.

How the song came about direct quote from Pink: ” When I wrote this song, there was such a simple need to it. I know everyone wants to hear Celine wail, I wanted to hear Celine’s soul. She is just simply amazing, and getting to write a song for her is one of the biggest honors of my life.”
Celine on how she got the song: “Dion says Pink approached her about the song while she was dealing with the losses of her husband and long-time manager, René Angélil, and her older brother Daniel, who both died within a few days of each other in January. “She’s a genuine person, and [it was] so generous of her to take the time to write a song for me during the most difficult time of mine,” Dion says. “People have a tendency to send me really sad songs, and we do want to sing the touching songs, but life is beautiful, and I really want to believe that René has a life after his life, that he doesn’t suffer anymore.”

Divas demand encores—Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion know that. On new albums, both released the same day, two of the biggest voices in pop have stuck that word right in their album titles. But in an era when the D-word might conjure images of Beyoncé or Adele, these two stars are proving they still deserve a place on the stage.
With Encore un Soir, meanwhile, Dion is hitting a somber note: The title refers to the memories stirred by the loss of her husband, René Angélil, and her brother Daniel—both of whom died from cancer this year. And the 48-year-old underscores the familial bond with her first album in four years that’s sung entirely in her native French.
No stranger to bravura flourishes herself, Dion purposely selected “uplifting themes” for her album. Yet the best tracks here are the ones that express her pain. On “Les Yeux au Ciel” (“Eyes Toward the Sky”), Dion sings of a godless firmament, while on the title track, she philosophizes about the moments we waste in denial of death. Dion may have one of music’s most bombastic voices, but for her French-language albums, she brings nuance. Amid some lingering overkill, Dion finds a rare acoustic intimacy on “Plus Qu’ailleurs.” Better, on the Quebecois classic “Ordinaire,” she inhabits the lyric with a defiance that makes you wish she’d sideline her usual Titanic blowouts and opt for more gorgeous encores like this. Celine Dion has paid tribute to her late husband, Rene Angelil, in many ways since his tragic passing, but her new album ‘Encore Un Soir’ may just be the most touching one yet. Read our album review right here!
There will never be a time when Celine Dion, 48, creates an album that isn’t beautiful. In the wake of her husband Rene Angelil‘s death, however, Celine brings a new kind of beauty to her music — one that combines heartbreak with passion and love. Rene was the one who believed in Celine in the early days of career, and Encore Un Soir seems to be not just a way to honor him, but thank him for getting Celine where she is now.
Although Celine didn’t pen any of the 12 songs on the record, it’s clear from the opening track “Plus qu’ailleurs” that she didn’t make this album to tell the world about how much she loved Rene through lyrics. Frankly, her love was apparent long before he passed away. Instead, Celine — who is indubitably known for her powerhouse voice — used Encore Un Soir to pay tribute to Rene by putting more tenderness into her voice instead of power.
This was evident with her first single from the album, the title track “Encore Un Soir.” The hauntingly beautiful song was a great introduction to what else Celine had to offer on her latest album. While it’s easy to hear the pain in her voice in songs like “Le bonheur en face” and “A la plus haute branche,” every track captures the essence of what Celine has brought to the music industry since Rene helped boost her to stardom years ago.
That’s not to say there aren’t some mind-blowing vocal moments on the album. Just take a listen to “L’etoile,” “Ordinaire,” and especially the chorus of “Les yeux au ciel”!

While it is clear that Celine was paying tribute to Rene on Encore Un Soir, there’s still a bit of variety in the song’s tempos and melodies that showcase the versatility Celine has as an artist, from “Ma faille” to “Si c’était à refaire.” Above all, this album is a reminder of the amazing talent Rene discovered in 1981, and that’s the best tribute Celine could’ve delivered.
